Peanut Butter: A Short History

Peanut Butter: A Short History

January 24th is National Peanut Butter Day!

Peanut Butter is a staple in most American households, but how many of you know much about it? Where did peanut butter come from? And how did it become so popular?

The history of peanut butter is a long and winding one. The first evidence of peanut butter being consumed dates back to ancient Peru, where people would grind peanuts into a paste and use it as a food. Peanut butter was also consumed in Africa and Asia, and it is believed that African slaves brought peanut butter to the Americas.

The first recorded recipe for peanut butter was published in 1884, but it wasn't until the early 1900s that peanut butter really started to gain popularity. This was due in part to the work of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, who promoted peanut butter as a healthy food. Kellogg was the founder of the Kellogg's cereal company, and he believed that peanut butter was a good source of protein and nutrients.

Peanut butter really took off during World War II. The US government promoted peanut butter as a healthy and affordable food for soldiers, and it became a staple of the military diet. After the war, peanut butter continued to grow in popularity, and it is now one of the most popular foods in the world.

Today, peanut butter is enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a popular ingredient in sandwiches, snacks, and desserts. Peanut butter is also used in many commercial products, such as protein bars and even energy drinks.

On the 24th, make yourself and extra peanut buttery sandwich and pair it with a jammy wine!
