Ask a Pro: How to Store Wine

Ask a Pro: How to Store Wine

Dear Wine Pro,
Love the site! Just made my third purchase after missing out on one because I wasn't a member.
Here's my question: I have enjoyed wine for years, but just recently became able to invest in collecting wine and I have seen some differing opinions on how to store it properly. What's your take?
Thanks,
Eager Collector
Solid question and one that many of us probably underthink. Wine is delicate and can be easily damaged by improper storage. If you want to enjoy your wine at its best, it is important to store it properly.

There are a few key factors to consider when storing wine, including temperature, light, and humidity.

Temperature

Wine should be stored at a cool, constant temperature. The ideal temperature for storing wine is between 50 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is too high, the wine will age prematurely and lose its flavor. If the temperature is too low, the wine will become sluggish and difficult to pour.

Light

Wine should be stored in a dark place. Exposure to light can cause the wine to oxidize and develop a vinegary taste.

Humidity

The ideal humidity level for storing wine is between 50 and 70%. If the humidity is too low, the cork will dry out and allow air to enter the bottle, which can spoil the wine. If the humidity is too high, the cork will mold, which can also spoil the wine.

I start with the three primary factors instead of just suggesting specific stuff to buy because wine storage can get pricey. From +$100k custom wine cellars that would double as an apartment for many of us (check out Innovative Wine Cellar Designs and drool along with us), to repurposing a shoe rack in the hallway closet, there are a number of different ways to store wine. The best way to store your wine will depend on your budget and your needs.

If you have a large collection of wine, or if you are planning to store your wine for an extended period of time, it may be worth investing in a wine cellar. Wine cellars can be expensive, but they provide the ideal environment for storing wine. One like this from Wine Enthusiast is great!

No matter how you choose to store your wine, it is important to make sure that the wine is stored in a cool, dark, and humid place. If you follow these simple tips, you can enjoy your wine at its best for years to come.
